Am 6. Juli 2009 kündigte der Gouverneur des US-Bundesstaats Illinois Pat Quinn an, dass Brent Adams „Acting Secretary of Financial and Professional Regulation“ (IDFPR) des Staates werde. Adams lebt offen schwul und offen HIV-positiv.
Adams äußerte gegenüber der Presse, er sei stolz, eine Rolle bei der Gleichberechtigung von Menschen mit HIV zu spielen:
“Time and time again, Governor Quinn has demonstrated his commitment to progressive values, and I’m honored to play a role in promoting his vision of a state that strives to project and promote equality of life for all people, including persons living with HIV“.
Adams war zuvor unter anderem bei der AIDS Foundation of Chicago und bei Citizen Action, Illinois.
In Großbritannien hatte Chris Smith, früheres Kabinettsmitglied, 2005 mitgeteilt, er sei HIV-positiv. Tony Blair, damals Premierminister, habe dies bei seiner Ernennung nicht gewusst. Smith war damals das erste offen schwule Kabinettsmitglied in Großbritannien.
