Die International AIDS-Society fordert die G8-Staaten auf, ihre Zusagen zum Zugang zu Aids-Prävention und HIV-Therapie ernst zu nehmen und einzuhalten.
Im Juni diesen Jahres findet in Kanada der nächste G8-Gipfel statt. Aus diesem Anlass forderten die International AIDS Society IAS den Ministerpräsidenten Kanadas Steven Harper auf, die G8-Staaten an ihr Bekenntnis zu Zugang zu HIV-Prävention und Behandlung zu erinnern und die Einhaltung dieses Bekenntnisses anzumahnen.
Im Jahr 2005 hatten sich die G8-Staaten dazu bekannt, bis zum Jahr 2010 universell für Zugang zu Aids-Prävention, HIV-Therapie und medizinischer Versorgung zu sorgen.
Die IAS fordert die G8-Staaten auf, ihre Zusagen von 2005 einzuhalten. Die bisherigen finanziellen Leistungen der G8-Staaten blieben weit hinter dem Bedarf zurück. In ihrem Brief vom 29. Januar 2010 betont die IAS:
„As host of the next G8 Summit, we applaud you for focusing on accountability for the commitments the G8 has already made. One of the most significant of these commitments was made at the 2005 G8 Summit in Gleneagles, Scotland, and pledged to get as close as possible to universal access HIV prevention, treatment and care by 2010. The movement to provide universal access by 2010 is making important gains every day, with 4 million people now on treatment. Yet this remarkably effective effort is facing serious setbacks and may be allowed to fail because of declining funds and weakening political commitment. If the efforts started to scale up AIDS services are allowed to decline or reverse, new initiatives to address maternal and child health cannot succeed.“
